Places to Donate goods to in Detroit

Where to Donate in the Detroit Area Photo credits: saveculture.org As summer is coming to an end, all of the college students start moving out, and there is always a surplus of things that are getting thrown away. When you are going to clean out your apartment and throw all of those goods away, whether it be clothing, food, furniture, etc., take some time to think of where you could drop it off instead. The things you no longer have a need for could greatly help other students or even families in the area that are struggling. Some ideas of places to drop things off at are: St. Vincent de Paul Society St. Vincent de Paul Society is a religious building, but is very well known for helping people who are struggling. They accept donations to help those in need. They are located at   3000 Gratiot Ave, Detroit, MI 48207.  Salvation Army The Salvation Army is a nonprofit organization run to help those in need. When donating here, it is important to understand that your goo

4 Places that Give Help at Wayne State University When you are in school, making ends meet can be extremely difficulty. And if you are making ends meet, having any money left over for anything else is practically unheard of. We are not stranger to the jokes about college students being broke, but it is a serious problem that is on the rise. WSU recognizes this problem, and has several different organizations and programs to help students. Finding help can often me embarrassing, or difficult, especially if you do not know where to start. Here are a few of the different options for help that WSU offers students who are struggling financially.  1. The HIGH Program The Helping Individuals Go Higher (HIGH) Program is a program run by the university's first lady, Mrs. Jacqueline Wilson. This program is designed to help financially burdened students. The program will assist students with all different kinds of financial problems such as tuition, rent, books, transportation,

Broke Millennial

5 Things Millennials Should Know About Money Yes, this is for you, college students When it comes to money, we all know the cliche sayings, whether they are true or not. Have a rainy day fund, pay yourself first, pay your bills on time, you can snowball your way out of debt, etc. As these are all true, there is so much more to being good with money. It all first comes from understanding money beyond the surface value of things. Here are 5 good things to know when it comes to money and money management.  1. Other people will enjoy spending your money We all know your twenties and early thirties is a time to live. Everyone is having big blow out birthday parties, destination bachelor and bachelorette parties, and wanting to travel the world. These things are all fun, and all sound intriguing and like a good idea at first. In reality, it leaves you in an awkward spot to explain you cannot afford the big birthday gifts and drinks, along with that $2,500 vacation to Mexico

10 Ways to Save Money in College

10 Money Saving Tips for College Students Wait until classes starts to buy your book In college, professors will always tell you that the textbook is mandatory before classes start. So, you will go out and buy this $250 book, that you might never end up picking up or opening. To avoid this happening, wait until classes start to buy books. Once you are in a class, and see the syllabus and get to know the professor a little, you can usually figure out if buying the book will be worth it. This technique has saved so many college students, including myself, tons of money on books.       2. Buy used textbooks whenever possible Think of buying books like car shopping. The new car is pretty, and looks awesome. Sometimes they are even easier to find than a used car. BUT, the used car is way cheaper, and still gets the job done. When it comes to buying books, you just need it to get the job done. Sure, it being brand new and pretty is nice, but if it saves you $100 to buy or rent

Care Bags for the Homeless

HELPING HOMELESS PEOPLE One care-bag at a time I know it is something we have all thought when someone who is homeless asks for money, "what are they really going to use my money for?" This is normal, and most people will have this thought at least once or twice in their lifetime, but this should not discourage you from helping people in need. Instead of just giving money, try creating care bags for the homeless. Care bags are a way to help people who are in need, and know exactly where your help is going. So what is inside of a care bag? There is an endless amount of things you could put into a care bad, but it is important to remember to put the essentials in a care bag for a homeless person. Here at HIGH, we have compiled a list of cheap essentials we find important to have when making a care bag.   Shampoo Toothpaste/ Toothbrush  Water Canned Goods Crackers (or a nonperishable item like this) Hat/Gloves/Scarf  T-shirt Pants Socks/Shoes Feminine Hyg
