Socially Distant Summer on a Budget

2020 has been a crazy ride for the world, and it is only halfway passed. While many months of extreme anxiety washed over everyone regarding everything from jobs, food, and toilet paper - compounded with the heartache experienced while not able to see loved ones for an extended amount of time – we all looked to the warm summer months for relief. Well, they’re here… Now what?

While many establishments and theme parks have begun to open their doors back up slowly, the key message I want to drive is “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.” With gas prices at rock-bottom lows, it may seem more incentivizing than ever to drive down to Disney World. However, the COVID-19 risk is still far from expelled. Besides, there are plenty of other safe and financially-sound activities available around the State.

Visit your local Metroparks!

I have said time and time again that our local Metroparks do not get the recognition they deserve. Located 45 minutes from Detroit in Milford, just off I-96, Kensington Metropark is only a short drive away. Offering 4,500 acres of wooded hiking and biking trails, Kensington also boasts an 18-hole golf course, and Kent Lake; a serene 1,200-acre lake perfect for fishing and swimming. All perfect activities while maintaining a socially distant lifestyle.

A daily admission pass to the park is $10 and an annual pass is $40 ($29 for Seniors)

Starry Sky

Nothing much more socially distant than going on a night-hike and star gazing. Nighttime is severely unappreciated. Being able to lay back and listen to different night wildlife while looking for passing meteors and satellites is not only awe inspiring, but education for the kids. Feeling even more adventurous? Visit https://darksitefinder.com/maps/world to see areas around you with the least amount of light pollution for optimal star gazing. I also recommend the IOS app Sky Guide. Hold your phone up to the sky and have a live map of stars, planets, satellites and other celestial sights. Or, of course, just sit back and relax and take a deep breath to catch yourself up during these crazy times.

These are only a few different ways to get the most out of this crazy summer while on a budget!
