HIGH Program Featured on The Pulse with Karen Dumas

Mary Barden, Director of Philanthropy for the HIGH (Helping Individuals Go Higher) program, was a guest on 910 AM’s “The Pulse with Karen Dumas” to discuss how Wayne State University is helping homeless students and those in need. The organization, founded by Wayne State First Lady Jacqueline Wilson, recently received $25,000 from the Sean Anderson Foundation to establish an endowment. Featured Student Story of the Week

"I am an Assistant Professor in the College of Education. Earlier this semester a student in the College of Education told her professor she couldn't complete the service-learning hours and the course because her roommate had left and she was stuck paying the rent. She was falling behind on the payments, and had a hold placed on her account by the university. Her family was not in the position to help her and she would likely have to drop out of WSU. A colleague, visiting scholar to the College of Eduaction, had heard Mrs. Wilson speak at the Poverty Conference and mention the HIGH Program. The student was offered help contact the HIGH Program. When she did HIGH was able to help her and the hold was lifted off her account. She was beaming when she came to class the next week. I would like to thank you and say how grateful I am for the fast and effective help you are giving our students who need it." - Dr. Justine Kane

Sean Anderson Foundation creates $25,000 endowment for WSU HIGH Program

The Sean Anderson Foundation has committed $25,000 to establish an endowment for the Wayne State University HIGH (Helping Individuals Go Higher) Program. The funds will be used to provide short-term support to Wayne State students experiencing homelessness or precarious housing situations. The Sean Anderson Foundation was founded in 2012 by recording artist Big Sean. Sean’s vision is to improve the quality of life for young people and their families. The foundation accomplishes this by partnering with other established organizations, by sponsoring its own educational seminars, and by providing avenues for supplemental educational, cultural, health and recreational programs. This money will aid the HIGH Program in continuing making strides toward helping the students in need at Wayne State University, so we can help more students in bigger ways. We are very thankful for this endowment. We are looking forward to what the HIGH Program will be doing in the future.

College Homeless Awareness

Did you know there are more than 58,000 homeless college students worldwide? Not only do college students have to concentrate on getting degrees, maintaining good grades, and balancing jobs, they have to worry about where they may have to sleep for the night. FASFA ( Free Application for Federal Student Aid) typically only covers tuition, and when it comes down to housing, students are left to fend for themselves. This is a terrifying feeling, that no student should have to face while they are in pursuit of an education. Many students don't want to dropout of school, simply because they cannot afford it. They want to continue to strive for an education that they believe will help their dream of getting a fulfilling career entails. So students who choose to continue on with financial difficulties are left to go to homeless shelters, couch surfing, or living with family members. Universities may be aware of how many students are homeless, but these are statistics the school ge...
