Celebrating #313Day with the HIGH Program Team's Favorite Spots

March 13th (or 3/13) is 313 Day, a day in honor of the City of Detroit. As part of Wayne State, the HIGH Program is among the proud residents of Midtown in the heart of the city. Our team comes from all walks of life, from Detroit natives to out-of-state transplants and everything in between. To celebrate our pride in living and working in Detroit, we asked some of the HIGH team to tell us their favorite places right here in Midtown! Here's what they said:

Pearlanne, Executive Assistant — Mario's Restaurant
"[An] elegant supper club offering old-school service, relish tray starters and dancing. It’s been a go to place for my family for many years. We celebrate anniversaries, birthdays and we love their Easter Brunch."
4222 2nd Ave., Detroit, MI | $$$ | Website

Ryan, Videographer — Bronx Bar
"Good little dive with a pool table, good food and an outdoor patio. Pretty fun on weekends but also a nice chill place to go mid-day or after work."

Leslie, Team Leader — Russell Street Deli
"Whether grabbing breakfast before a morning of shopping, or lunching afterwards, Russell Street Deli located in the heart of the Eastern Market is my go to on Saturday mornings. Patrons enjoy family styled seating while dining with other Eastern Market shoppers. Russell, located on a street of the same name, is known for using fresh in-season ingredients to create very unique dishes.  My personal favorite is an omelet made with roasted eggplant, shiitake mushrooms and roasted tomato.  Lunch time features a host of original soups such as their delicious black eyed pea and deli styled sandwiches."

Kaitlyn, Social Media Specialist — For the Love of Sugar
"For the Love of Sugar is like stepping into a quaint little Parisian café with a Detroit flare. Their menu offers desserts such as homemade cakes by the slice and delicate French macarons (in both traditional and more "American" flavors such as Fruity Pebbles and Captain Crunch), as well as vegan and gluten-free versions of those. They also sell coffee, and I recommend the birthday cake latte; it tastes just like birthday cake without the overwhelming sweetness that one might expect. It's a wonderful place to curl up and read on a rainy day — and as a bonus, the cozy atmosphere and colorful desserts mean that every visit is Instagram-worthy!"

Logan, Podcast Tech — Detroit Institute of Arts
"I would say my favorite place in Midtown is probably the DIA. Between the ever expanding exhibits and the café where I can get a craft beer, it is an awesome place to spend a Friday evening after work."
