College works to help homeless get degrees

The Wyandotte-Downriver branch of AAUW welcomed guest speaker Mary Barden, director of philanthropy for the College of Education at Wayne State University, at its November meeting, held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Trenton. Barden is an advocate for the Helping Individuals Go Higher (HIGH) program at Wayne State University. Though the assumption is that if you are homeless or poor, school isn’t a concern Wayne State students in this situation know that education is the answer. Regardless of the hardships some must face, they are determined to graduate and contribute to the professional and social fabric of the tri-county area. The HIGH program works to ensure no student demonstrating promise abandons the dream of earning a degree solely because of housing or financial challenges. http://www.trentontrib.com/college-works-to-help-homeless-get-degrees.html

Featured Student Story of the Month

The Wayne State University HIGH ( Helping Individuals Go Higher ) Program volunteered at the Cass Community Social Services kitchen in order to help spread awareness about the issues of hunger & homelessness in honor of National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week . National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week is an annual program where people come together to draw attention to the problems of hunger and homelessness. This is the time of year where we reflect on what we have in our lives. Sadly, there are college students across the country who are dealing with hunger and unstable housing. Students are often forced to make the hard choice between paying for food, housing, or tuition. These are students who have exhausted all resources available to them and they need your help. You can help a student at Wayne State University who is in immediate need. Please visit our website and make a donation TODAY.

Restaurant of the Month Chartreus is located on the corner of Woodward & Kirby in beautiful Midtown Detroit, just north of the Detroit Institute of Arts. Set in the renovated Rodin restaurant space in the Park Shelton building, Chartreuse feels clean, airy and open with oversized windows, high ceilings and chartreuse-colored walls. Executive chef Doug Hewitt, chose the name because chartreuse — a complex liqueur dating back hundreds of years — is one of his favorite spi ... rits, making the color an obvious decorative choice.  The restaurant’s opening hours are Tuesdays-Thursdays 11:30-2, 5-9:30, Fridays: 11:30-2, 5-10:30 and Saturdays: 5-10:30.
